Lionel Messi, Ronaldo lead Associated Press Global Soccer player rankings

LONDON — Lionel Messi’s four-goal burst ensured that he and Barcelona returned to the top of the Associated Press Global Soccer rankings this week.

The romance of England’s FA Cup produced some unlikely names in the Top 10 teams and a previously unknown striker at No. 9.

Thirteeen out of 18 panelists placed Messi at No. 1 on their list of Top 10 players, with Real Madrid forward Cristiano Ronaldo in second place after his hat trick. With 10 points for the top position, Messi earned 176 points, followed by Ronaldo with 159.

Super Bowl advertisers tease viewers

NEW YORK (AP) — Super Bowl advertisers are learning the art of the tease.

Supermodel Kate Upton appears in an online Mercedes-Benz video in a low-cut top. An unknown man wakes up with his face covered in smeared lipstick and his hands bound in furry handcuffs in a Gildan Activewear clip. And “30 Rock” star Tracy Morgan seemingly curses in a spot for Kraft’s Mio flavored drops.

“Hey, can you say (bleep) on TV?” he says in the spot titled “Bleep.”

Is flag football ahead for NFL?

NEW ORLEANS — Making the game safer is making NFL players unsure what’s a legal hit.

Players on both Super Bowl teams say they are confused about which hits are considered clean and which ones could lead to a fine. And it’s not just the guys on defense who are wondering about the future of pro football.

“I think the rules will change a lot,” San Francisco 49ers tight end Vernon Davis said Tuesday. “There’s already no helmet to helmet. Might be flag football, maybe.”

Hoops star Didrickson honored in Alaska Legislature

The Alaska Legislature has honored Herb Didrickson, one of the newest inductees into the Alaska Sports Hall of Fame.

Sen. Bert Stedman, R-Sitka, authored the citation honoring Didrickson, who will be inducted into the hall next month. Nearly every member of the Legislature signed on to the citation as co-sponsors.

The Citation, dated Monday, was read across in both the Alaska House and Senate.

Lawmakers often write citations as a way to honor notable Alaskans or happenings, like the winner of the Iditarod sled dog race or a high school basketball championship team.

A-Rod denies PED use report; MLB investi-gates

NEW YORK — Alex Rodriguez denied a newspaper report that accused him of buying human growth hormone and other performance-enhancing substances from a Miami-area clinic.

The Miami New Times, an alternative weekly, reported Tuesday that it obtained records detailing purchases by Rodriguez, Melky Cabrera, Gio Gonzalez, Bartolo Colon, Nelson Cruz and Yasmani Grandal from a clinic called Biogenesis, run by Anthony Bosch. The paper also posted copies of what it said were Bosch’s handwritten records, obtained through a former Biogenesis employee.

A top matchup on the courts, some twists and turns on the slopes, and races against the time clock all highlight this weekend’s home sports activities. The Juneau-Douglas Crimson Bears boy’s basketball team will host the Thunder Mountain Falcons in the first meeting of the season for the two squads that are the favorites to leave the Southeast Conference for the state tournament in late March. This will be the Crimson Bears’ Homecoming Series and the girls will host the Colony Knights on the same nights for some fan-friendly double header action.
